It’s only 4 days left before the start of the Deaflympics. Today three charter flights will bring to Ugra 350 athletes from 27 countries. The process of getting the Deaflympic venues ready for the Games is in its final stage.
On March’24 journalists from regional media had a press-tour around all four venues of the Deaflympics in order to check if Khanty-Mansiysk is able to host this important sport event on the highest level.
Journalists were also able to meet some members of the organizing committee as well as Deaflympic committees from 7 countries that were also visiting the sport venues of the Games.
«All experts came to a conclusion that technically Khanty-Mansiysk is absolutely ready to host the Deaflympics on the highest international level. Khanty-Mansiysk is known worldwide as a sport city, here a lot of winter sport competitions are held. These Games for deaf and hard-of-hearing people will strengthen the prestige and authority of the city», – said the President of the International Committee of Deaf Sports Valery Rukhlevev.
«The unique advantage of Khanty-Mansiysk is in the fact that all sport venues are placed within walking distance from hotels and catering places. Besides, a convenient scheme for spectators and transport is organized. In conducting the Deaflympics the capital of Ugra takes cue from the Olympic Games in Sochi. That’s why all sport equipment meets the highest standards. For example, while making ice for curling, the same equipment is used that was working in Sochi. The same approach is chosen for preparing the alpine skiing trails that will be used for competitions in 4 Deaflympic disciplines», – said the executive director of the organizing committee of the Deaflympics Spartak Antonenkov.
Besides, journalists wanted to know about the impressions of the representative of Kenya, the President of the Confederation of African Deaf Sports Peter Kalae.
«Upon my return back home, I will tell my colleagues that sport culture in Russia has changed a lot. Its experience is very interesting for me. This is my second time in Khanty-Mansiysk. Sport is very popular and well-developed here», – said he.
Now sport venues are almost 100% ready.
For example, the Winter Sport Centre is absolutely ready for the Games. At the moment the start and finish zones are reconstructed after the end of the Biathlon World Cup Final. Spectators’ zones, athlete rooms, wax cabins and ski testing hill are completely ready. According to the organizers, there’s plenty of snow on the tracks, both natural and artificial.
The Ice Palace is being prepared for curling. This will be the first time Khanty-Mansiysk will be hosting curling competitions. Experts are working on ice, preparing curling sheets as they did for the Olympics in Sochi. Thefinalicesurfacingisdone. By the way, stones for curling were also brought from the Olympic venues in Sochi.
On “Arena Ugra” that will host ice-hockey games of 5 world’s best deaf hockey teams, light signals will be used instead of sound signals. The light system was built in along the perimeter of the rink, so that athletes will be able to see the signals they need.
In “Khvoyny Urman” also almost all the works are finished. According to the chief referee of the snowboarding competitions Alexander Vegele the alpine skiing complex is 98% ready. The final minor works are being done now. Around 160 000 tons of snow were made to prepare the trails for the competitions.
