For the first time in a history one country is going to host 3 white Olympiads in a row. In 2015 Russia will become the capital of the Deaflympics.
The Deaflympics are the sport competitions for deaf athletes. They have the same status as Olympic and Paralympic games and are also held every 4 years. Russian athletes are participating in international competitions for deaf athletes since 1957 and are among the leaders of unofficial medal count.
The XVIII Winter Deaflympics will take place from March’28 till April’05. The deaf athletes will compete in 5 sports. 33 sets of medals will be presented during the games. Competitions in curling, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, snowboard and alpine skiing (slalom) will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk. The games and competitions will be conducted on the following venues: the Complex “Arena Ugra”, the Ice Palace, the Alpine skiing Complex “Khvoyny Urman”, the Alexander Philipenko Winter Sport Centre. Competitions in 4 other disciplines of alpine skiing will take place in Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk region in the Alpine skiing centre “Metallurg-Magnitogorsk”.
Today 450 athletes from 27 countries have sent the applications for participating in the Deaflympics. In March’2015 teams from Austria, Armenia, Hungary, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Kazakhstan, Canada, China, Mongolia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, the USA, Turkey, Ukraine, Finland, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Estonia and Japan will come to Khanty-Mansiysk.
The most exotic country for winter games will be Turkey. 6 athletes from Turkey will compete in cross-country skiing, alpine skiing and snowboard.
The most mass-scale sport will be ice hockey. 145 athletes from 6 countries – the USA, Sweden, Russia, Kazakhstan, Finland and Canada will take part in it.
Russian national team consists of 78 athletes from 19 regions of Russia. Our team is the only one that will participate in all 5 disciplines. The USA is having the second biggest national team consisting of 55 athletes, and the third biggest national team – 51 athlete – belongs to Canada.
A baby mammoth is the mascot of the Deaflympics. Experts say that it personalizes the natural strength and beauty of Siberia.
The logo of the Deaflympics symbolizes a hand in a shape of a black cock. The colors used are the colors of Ugra flag, which also reminds of the confluence of two great Siberian rivers – Ob and Irtysh.
One of the main stages of preparing for the Deaflympics if forming and training of volunteer team, which is going to work during the competitions. Around 800 volunteers are going to take part in the Deaflympics. They are attending training courses and learning Russian sign language. First training sessions took place in September 2014, the other two are planned for December and February 2015.
According to the governor of Ugra Natalia Komarova, all the sport venues of the Deaflympics meet the international standards and are ready for these Games: “The technical delegation of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf has visited Khanty-Mansiysk this spring and stated that all the venues were highly appraised”.
