On Wednesday 2 medal events were held in cross-country skiing competitions of the Deaflympics in Khanty-Mansiysk. Athletes from Ugra Anna Fedulova and Alexey Groshev have become winners in individual sprint.
Anna Fedulova finished first; one more Russian athlete Lyubov Misharina was second at finish. Third place was given to Alisa Pyshnyak. A nine-time champion of Deaflympics did not hide her emotions after finish: «I expected to get bronze but I was lucky enough to win the race! Today it was not easy for me, athletes from Ukraine are very strong and my skis were not waxed well. Besides, I am not a sprinter, this is not my favorite discipline, but I decided to participate in it and won! Still, I was very close to giving in in the second part of the race. I didn’t feel enough strength, but the support of fans on the stadium helped me very much. And at home my kids and husband are also watching the competitions. I am overwhelmed with emotions. Yesterday after my victory I was not sleeping well an in the morning my heart was beating so fast. This is my 9th gold medal, so now I have a new goal ahead – to win my 10th medal! » – said Anna Fedulova after the race.
The race was also not very easy for Lyubov Misharina:
I devote all my energies to this race and to be as fast as possible at finish. I am very happy to win silver today! The race was very difficult, the climate here is different, I need to get used to it and the uphill was very steep. The team of Ukraine was skiing fast but I managed to keep their pace».
In men’s sprint Alexey Groshev has become a gold medalist, while athletes from Ukraine Pavlo Mandziuk and Volodymyr Pyshniak – a cousin of a bronze medalist of women’s sprink – were second and third at finish.
Alexey Groshev, who has won second gold medal of these Deaflympics was, was happy to win men’s sprint today: «This was my last race on these Deaflympics. So today my only plan was to win gold. I was conserving my strength until finals and strained every sinew in a crucial moment! I will not participate in other disciplines. I wanted to win gold and now I have won 2 medals of the competitions! I am so happy! Our team is very well-trained and the tracks here are perfect although the weather is warm. Now I will support our team on the stadium! ».
Tomorrow deaf cross-country skiers will compete in team sprint and on April’04 they will participate in mass-start.
