18 torch-bearers was carried the Deaflympic fire along the streets of Khanty-Mansiysk!
The Deaflympic torch relay was a part of the Opening Ceremony of the Games. The first torch-bearers of the relay were famous athletes of Russian team that will participate in there Deaflympics.
The honor to carry the Deaflympic fire was given to a volunteer from Belgorod region of Russia Alexander Bazarov. For him this will be the 4th Olympia he is participating in as a volunteer.
Alexander Bazarov: «I was working on Olympics and Paralympics, they I was participating in the Olympiad of robot in Sochi and now I am here in Khanty-Mansiysk. To be a volunteer is my hobby. I am glad not only to attend these Deaflympics but also to be a torch-bearer».
A four-time champion of Paralympic Games Alexey Ashapatov came to Khanty-Mansiysk to support the deaf athletes.
«This is my fourth time I am participating in a torch relay. I feel very proud of my country. Go, Russia! Go, athletes!»
The final stage of the torch relay was relied upon the medal winner of Deaflympics in Bulgaria Alexander Drozdov. The athlete has lighted the Deaflympic cauldron on the central square of Khanty-Mansiysk.
«I knew that I was given an honor to light the Deaflympic fire only today. When the lest of flag-bearers was announced I felt nervous not to hear my name under number 17 – shares his emotions Alexander Drozdov. My friend Alexander Degtyannikov is participating in these Deaflympics, I will be supporting him. I wish all our athletes luck and fair play!»
It is to be noted that all the participants of the relay were awarded with the memorable certificates of participation. The official ceremony of awarding them was held by an Olympic champion Svetlana Zhurova and a director of the Centre of adaptive sport of Ugra Eduard Isakov.
«I knew about the Deaflympics for a long time. Several times I was participating in farewell ceremonies in honor of Deaflympic team of Russia, – says Svetlana Zhurova. – Now I was invited to Khanty-Mansiysk, and tomorrow I will definitely visit all the competitions and support our athletes on the venues».
