It is to be reminded that curling was included in the Deaflympic program in 2007, the first gold and silver winners of the Deaflympic curling men’s and women’s tournaments were teams of Canada and USA, third place went to China in men’s tournament and Slovakia in women’s tournament.
Deaf curling in Russia takes its history since 2008, that’s why Russia was not participating in the first Deaf Curling World Championships. Again Canada was the winner of these competitions. The first big international competition for the Russian deaf curling team was the II Deaf Curling World Championships in Switzerland. The results were surprising – our women’s team got gold and men’s team was silver-medalist.
The current Deaflympic season has started successfully for our national team. On the first European Deaf Curling Championships in Sochi both squads showed a very good performance winning gold of the competitions.
Technical aspects of the game
To make the spectators understand what’s going on on ice arena of the Deaflympics, we’ll write about the basics of curling.
«Who invented curling?».
Curling was invented in medieval Scotland. Evidence that curling existed in this land includes a curling stone inscribed with the date 1511 uncovered when an old pond was drained at Dunblane, Scotland. The first written reference to a contest using stones on ice comes from the records of Paisley Abbey in 1541. The current rules of curling were officially approved in the beginning of XIXth century and have not been seriously changed.
«What sport equipment is used in curling?»
Rocks used in curling are also called stones. They are the granite playing utensils that weigh approximately 20 kilograms! The distance between a hog line and rings is 34,75 meters which can be compared with 8-storey building.
Throwing stones is a real art and its technique is strictly defined by the rules of the competitions. The thrower throws from the stone. Another player, usually the skip, is stationed behind the button to determine the tactics, weight, turn, and line, and the other two may sweep in front of the stone to influence the trajectory.
Depending on the game situation the stone can be thrown with the following aims:
• To put a stone into the house;
• To remove stones of the competitor out of the house;
• the protect the shot rock (the stone closest to the button at the time) or to make the opposing team’s shot difficult.
«Who plays curling and what roles they have?»
Like in any other tactical game, roles of team members are strictly defined. Every team member has its own functions. The skip or the captain is responsible for the game strategy, the vice-skip controls the team actions when the skip is throwing the stone. There are also the first and the second.
«Do curling players need some special equipment?»
Although curling players are not gaining big speed during the game and all their movements are smooth, there’s still some risk to get trauma. Athletes are using knee-caps to protect knees. The shoes for curling are also made using a special technique. First of all, they have felt inside to keep warmth as athletes are spending a lot of time on ice. Besides, they have dissimilar soles. The slider shoe is designed for the sliding foot and the “gripper shoe” for the hack foot.
«What is the aim of the game?»
The game consists of 10 independent periods, called “ends”. Each player on the team throws two stones in each end. Each team throws 8 stones in an end. The purpose of the game is to score points by getting stones closer to the house center. Players from either team take shots from the far side of the sheet. An end is complete when all eight rocks from each team have been delivered, a total of sixteen stones. The winning team is then awarded one point for each of its own stones lying closer to the button than the opponent’s closest stone. The game is won by the team that has more points after the end of all ends. If the teams are tied at the end of the game, play continues for as many ends as may be required to break the tie. The winner is the team with the highest score after all ends have been completed.
