The final stage of sign language courses for volunteers and specialists, involved in conducting of Deaflympics takes place in the capital of Ugra on February’17-25.
The students are communicating only with the help of their hands and mimics, oral speech is prohibited during the classes.
«It is very important to teach people how to translate from Russian to sign language and vice versa accurately, – says a sign language teacher Svetlana Elfimova. – There are many examples of situations when lives and destinies of deaf people were depending upon an interpreter, for example, during court sessions. That is why it is very important to put a student into a company of people communicating with signs, not only to make him know the meanings of signs and gestures but also to teach him how to understand deaf and hard-of-hearing people».
In order to do this, the members of the Deaflympic snowboarding team of Russia were asked to attend one of the classes. At the moment Russian snowboarders are having their training session in Khanty-Mansiysk. All team members showed their interest in visiting students and talking to them using sign language.
Every student that will successfully finish the sign language course will be able to practice his communication skills during the forthcoming international sport event of 2015 – the XVIII Winter Deaflympics that will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk from March’28 till April’05.
