During the process of getting ready for the forthcoming XVIII Winter Deaflympics 2015 a special sign symbolizing Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra in sign language was presented. From now on if a person sees a sign made of two crossed “horns” gestures – popular among fans of rock music – he will understand that it means Ugra, says a reporter of «URA.Ru».
The sign symbolizes the crown of Ugra – an interlacing of deer horns on the emblem of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. According to one of the organizers of the Deaflympics Evgeniy Evtushenkov, these sign was created by deaf sport fans. Formerly, when we were talking about Khanty-Mansiysk, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug or Ugra we were making a sign meaning letter “H”. But many people found that the sign has much in common with fascist symbols. Then we saw the emblem of Ugra on its flag, saw the horns of deer and invented this sign», — says Evtushenkov.
The Governor of Ugra Natalia Komarova supported this idea. She is sure that this sign that will be used for communication of people with hearing disabilities is perfectly characterizing Ugra as well as its capital. «When I saw this sign, I understood from the very beginning, that this means Khanty-Mansiysk», — says the head of the region.
It was also noted by Natalia Komarova that the mascot of the Deaflympics is also approved. It is a baby-mammoth. According to the participant of the national contest for best mascot, this animal symbolizes Western Siberia better than any other animal. The logo of the Deaflympics is done in colors of the Ugra flag in a shape of a bird and an open palm; it represents the confluence of Ob and Irtysh.
As it was said before by «URA.Ru», less than 100 days are left before the start of the first Deaflympics in Russia. The competitions will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk from March’28 till April’05. The Deaflympic torch relay will be held on the street of Khanty-Mansiysk. The Deaflympic flame lighting ceremony will take place on the central square of Khanty-Mansiysk; it can also be watched online. The best deaf athletes of the world will meet in Ugra in order to compete in skiing, snowboard, ice-hockey and curling.
